Ancient wisdom reveals 7 rituals that will make you happy
Ancient wisdom reveals 7 rituals that will make you happyAncient wisdom reveals 7 rituals that will make you happyYou and I are leidlage the first people to wonder, How can I live a happier, more fulfilling life? Not by a long shot.Stoicism and Buddhism are both a few thousand years old and I write about them a fair amount because both have core elements that have been validated by modern science. And something I find even more interesting is that they also have a lot in common with each other. Originating on different continents, theyre like the brother from anotlageher mother or sister from another mister of psychology. When I see systems that have persisted for millenia, are backed by research, and have a lot in common, well, me gets reaaaaal curious about insights that should probably not be ignored. Lets callem Stoboo, shall we?Ladders is now on SmartNewsDownload the SmartNews app and add the Ladders channel to read the latest career news and advice wherever you go.Alrighty, let u s begin ur journey down The Noble Stoboo PathLife isnt the problem. Your interpretations areYour flight is late and you have to sit around the airport, bored. And that makes you angry. Or Your flight is late and you get to sit down and rest for a minute instead of shuffling onto a crowded plane. And that makes you happy.Guess what? Flight being late isnt the issue. What made you angry or happy was your interpretation of what that neutral event means. Both Stoicism and Buddhism feel that the world is what it is. We get all riled up because of how we interpret those events. And, if we choose, we can change those interpretations and change our feelings. From The Daily StoicHe was sent to prison. But the observation he has suffered evil, is an addition coming from you. - Epictetus, Discourses, 3.8.5b 6aAnd Buddha saidWe are what we think. All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world.Science backs them to the hilt. This concept is the crux of Cognitive Beh avioral Therapy (which originated with Stoicism) and mindfulness (which originated in Buddhism.) And theyre two of the most validated and utilized therapeutic techniques out there. So how do we put this idea to use? Next time you get angry or frustrated, dont focus on your circumstances. Ask yourself what belief about the circumstances you are clinging to. And think about how that might be incorrect or not useful. How many times has a schwimmbad thing turned out to be a good thing once you had more information or saw the eventual result? Exactly.(To learn more about the science of a successful life, check out my bestselling book here.)Problem is, you make behauptung interpretations really fast. So they can be hard to correct. Dont worry. The Stoboo boys thought about that a long time agoStep backKids instantly shriek with joy when something good happens and two seconds later theyre shrieking with grief when something bad happens. And they can go back and forth all day long. (When adul ts do this they probably need medication and you should definitely stop dating them.)What do the people we hold up as icons do? Well, James Bond doesnt hop up and down when he beats Blofeld and he doesnt cry for his mom when henchmen shoot at him. Hes not emotionless - hes in control of his emotions. Plain and simple hes less reactive to his external circumstances. The events around him do not dictate his behavior. He decides how he will respond. When youre reactive, you give up free will. Environment says this you behave like that. Youre impulsive and impulsive rarely has a positive connotation its pretty much synonymous with bad decisions.Neither Stoicism or Buddhism are fans of impulsive emotional reactions (and your parole officer wont be either if you give in to them). So when something happens and triggers a strong emotional response, Stoboo says step back. Take a deep breath and let your thinky-brain decide if throwing your laptop against the wall is the best way to cope with slow internet speeds. From The Daily StoicFirst off, dont let the force of the impression carry you away. Say to it, hold up a bit and let me see who you are and where you are from- let me put you to the test . . . - Epictetus, Discourses, 2.18.24From Mindfulness A Practical Guide to AwakeningAs were about to act, or when thoughts or emotions are predominant, do we remember to investigate and reflect on our motivation? Do we ask ourselves, Is this act or mind state skillful or unskillful? Is this something to cultivate or abandon? Where is this motivation leading? Do I want to go there?Science agrees. The term cognitive fusion is used to describe when were overwhelmed - possessed, even - by our feelings and cant see the bigger picture. We make better decisions when we see thoughts and feelings as just that thoughts and feelings. They are not you and you dont have to act on them.So what should we do? Well, Bruce Banner, when you feel those strong emotions well up, followed by a de sire to do something extreme - pause. The stronger the emotions and the more urgent the desire to act, the more skeptical you should be and the more you want to hit the brakes. At first, just give yourself a count of five. You want to extend your ability to feel the feelings without acting on them, fighting them or denying them. They will dissipate. It never seems like they will in the moment (and thats why feelings are so powerful) but they will dissipate.Ever been really angry but then something makes you laugh and the anger just seems to vanish? We dont need something external to snap us out of negative emotional states. With practice, you can get better at doing it on your own.(To learn the secret to never being frustrated again, click here.)But sometimes so many problems pile on us that constantly stepping back isnt an option. What perspective shift do we need to make for all the things in life outside of our control so that we dont end up in a near-constant state of paralysis? AcceptanceThe Stoics were control freaks. but not in the way we usually use that term. They were very serious about control, yes, but serious meaning that 99% of the time you dont have any. And you better get used to it.You cant even control your body some of the time. (Tell that headache to just stop and let me know well how that works.) All you can truly control is your deliberate thoughts. And if you refuse to accept this youre gonna spend a lot of time shaking your fist at the world. From The Daily StoicThe chief task in life is simply this to identify and separate matters so that I can say clearly to myself which are externals not under my control, and which have to do with the choices I actually control. Where then do I look for good and evil? Not to uncontrollable externals, but within myself to the choices that are my own . . . - Epictetus, Discourses, 2.5.4 5And Buddhism is big on not clinging. When you cling to your desires and expectations - even after life crosses its ar ms and says, Nope - you suffer. We must accept that life is not always going to give us what we want. When we give up trying to control things we cant, we feel better. From A Guide to the Bodhisattvas Way of LifeWhy be unhappy about something if it can be remedied? And what is the use of being unhappy about something if it cannot be remedied? And science is on board with this. You dont hear too many therapists recommending denial as a coping skill. Emotional acceptance of difficult life issues is one of the primary goals of psychotherapy. So how do we get started? Acceptance doesnt mean passivity. It just means not being in denial that we cannot 100% control the majority of outcomes in life.Accept there will be challenges. When your opponent gets the advantage in a game you dont waste time shouting, That should not have happened They do their thing and you respond, doing the best you can to improve your situation.(To learn the two-word morning ritual that will make you happy all day, click here.)While most people are probably in agreement that the above all makes good sense, there is a totally legitimate objection I acknowledge doing these things consistently sounds really really hard.Like now I know why Buddhist monks live in a monastery far away from all the grief I deal with daily level-of-hard. Yes, changing interpretations, stepping back and accepting difficulties every day seems like the mental equivalent of running a marathon. But people can run marathons. And they do. But they dont do it without preparation The mind requires trainingThey really shouldnt let people drive a brain around without a license. Its the most complex thing in the universe and we have no idea how to use it. On an emotional level its like giving a nuke to a five-year old.You know you should go to the gym for your body but for the brain we just have school, and all that does is give you information, not true mental discipline and emotional development. You wouldnt read a martial arts b ook and think you were ready for the UFC. Learning is one thing, training is another. And Stoboo says the brain must be trained or you void the warranty. From The Daily StoicIn this way you must understand how laughable it is to say, Tell me what to do What advice could I possibly give? No, a far better request is, Train my mind to adapt to any circumstance. In this way, if circumstances take you off script you wont be desperate for a new prompting. - Epictetus, Discourses, 2.2.20b 1 24b 25aAnd Buddha saidThe mind, hard to control, flighty, alighting where it wishes, one does well to tame. The well-trained mind brings happiness. And science has been rushing to play catch up by adopting these practices that have been around for millennia. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is the single most proven psychological modality in practice today. And many proven treatments have been developed from Buddhist mindfulness. So what should we do? Might as well stick to the classics. You can learn to medit ate here. And you can learn a number of Stoic exercises here. Get your brain to go jogging daily before you take on the mental marathon of life.(To learn how to be more productive - from the ancient Stoics - click here.)So far weve taken a pretty cerebral approach to all this. But isnt so much of life about feelings? Nothing more than feelings, Barbra?Feeling is the only way throughWe hear echoes of this all the time in expressions like face your fears or dont bottle up your emotions. And we need those reminders because feelings can hurt. A lot.Somebody you care deeply about tosses your heart in a wood chipper and the last thing you want to do is spend time dwelling in a torture chamber of your negative emotions. You want to avoid them, suppress them, or switch them off altogether. But you cant. Youre human. (Sorry.) Those feelings may bubble up as anxiety disorders or PTSD but they wont just go away. So we need to listen to the Stoics?Huh? Arent those the Spock guys who have no em otions - hence the adjective stoic?Wrong. Heres bestselling author Ryan HolidayThe Stoics are stereotyped as suppressing their emotions, but their philosophy was actually intended to teach us to face, process, and deal with emotions immediately instead of running from them. Tempting as it is to deceive yourself or hide from a powerful emotion like grief- by telling yourself and other people that youre fine- awareness and understanding are better. Distraction might be pleasant in the short term- by going to gladiatorial games, as a Roman might have done, for example. Focusing is better in the long term. That means facing it now. Process and parse what you are feeling. Remove your expectations, your entitlements, your sense of having been wronged. Find the positive in the situation, but also sit with your pain and accept it, remembering that it is a part of life. Thats how one conquers grief. And engagement with your experience, emotions and all, without judging it, is the heart of Buddhist mindfulness. From The Craving Mind(Mindfulness is) The awareness that arises from paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, and non-judgmentally. As Stephen Batchelor recently wrote, this definition points toward a human capability of learning how to stabilize attention and dwell in a lucid space of non-reactive awareness.Cognitive Behavioral Therapy conquers phobias with exposure therapy - slowly and incrementally facing your fears. It originated with Stoicisms premeditatio malorum which is basically exposure therapy without the exposure. And thats a technique we can easily use. You imagine the worst possible scenario, feeling it as realistically as possible, and, with time, find that its power over you shrinks and shrinks. When we step back from our feelings, make room for them on the couch next to us, and accept them, they start to go from being terrifying monsters to smartphone notifications we can choose to check or let go.(To learn the 5 questions that will make you emotionally strong, click here.)Still with me? Or is your mind off wandering around? That question is absolutely vital to your happiness as a Stoboo padawan Focus on the presentDesignating time to plan for the future is essential, as is reflecting on and learning from the past. But walking around obsessed with yesterday leads to regret and a constant focus on the future breeds anxiety. We are happiest and most effective when our minds cease to be time travelers and stay focused on the here and now. From The Daily StoicDont let your reflection on the whole sweep of life crush you. Dont fill your mind with all the bad things that might still happen. Stay focused on the present situation and ask yourself why its so unbearable and cant be survived. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 8.36From Mindfulness A Practical Guide to Awakening in our lives, how often are we living in anticipation of what comes next, as if that will finally bring us to some sort of completion or fulfillment? And modern research by Harvard happiness expert Daniel Gilbert shows that a wandering mind is not a happy mindPeople spend 46.9 percent of their waking hours thinking about something other than what theyre doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy Mind-wandering is an excellent predictor of peoples happiness, Killingsworth says. In fact, how often our minds leave the present and where they tend to go is a better predictor of our happiness than the activities in which we are engaged. So what should we do? Catch yourself in the act. This is your new game to play. Check in with yourself. Is my attention focused on the here and now? Or is my mind wandering to the past or future?Mindfulness is meditation writ large. In meditation, you focus on your breath, your attention wanders, and you return your attention to the breath. Over and over. And in living a mindful life, youre focused on the present, your mind wanders, and you return it to the present. Over and over. And eve ntually this will happen without effort. And youll be happier.(To learn 5 secrets from neuroscience that will increase your attention span, click here.)Okay, all of this is very internal. What attitude should we, as newly ordained Monks of the Stoboo Order, take toward those around us?People are ridiculous. Love them anywayIf youre accepting what comes, altering your interpretations, training your mind other people might start to seem like a pack of insane monkeys, acting impulsively on every whim and complaining endlessly. So should you just regard them as poo-flinging lesser primates? No. Youre not perfect. Theyre not perfect. Be patient. Be compassionate. Dont judge. Help. From The Daily StoicWhen you first rise in the morning tell yourself I will encounter busybodies, ingrates, egomaniacs, liars, the jealous and cranks. They are all stricken with these afflictions because they dont know the difference between good and evil. Because I have understood the beauty of good and the ugl iness of evil, I know that these wrong-doers are still akin to me . . . and that none can do me harm, or implicate me in ugliness- nor can I be angry at my relatives or hate them. For we are made for cooperation. - Marcus Aurelius, Meditations, 2.1And Buddhism once again gives Stoicism a high-five.From Mindfulness A Practical Guide to AwakeningThe more we understand our own minds, the more we understand everyone else. We increasingly feel the commonality of our human condition, of what creates suffering and how we can be free. Our practice also benefits others through the transformation of how we are in the world. If were more accepting, more peaceful, less judgmental, less selfish, then the whole world is that much more loving and peaceful, that much less judgmental and selfish. Our mind-body is a vibrating, resonating energy system. Of necessity, how we are affects everyone around us. On a boat in the middle of a great storm, one wise, calm rolle can bring everyone to safety. The world is like that boat, tossed by the storms of greed and hatred and fear. Can we be one of those people who help to keep it safe?As for science, this one is a slam dunk. Outside of your genetics, relationships are 1 when it comes to happiness-makers.From The Happiness Advantage The Seven Principles of Positive Psychology That Fuel Success and Performance at WorkMy empirical study of well-being among 1,600 Harvard undergraduates found a similar result- social support was a far greater predictor of happiness than any other factor, more than GPA, family income, SAT scores, age, gender, or race.So how do we boost our empathy and compassion and improve our relationships? Stoboo to the rescue The great Stoic Hierocles said to treat everyone as family and you will come to see them as such. And, similarly, what attitude does the Dalai Lama take when dealing with others?Trying to treat whoever he meets as an old friend.(To learn 3 secrets from neuroscience that will help you quit bad habi ts without willpower, click here.)Okay, weve covered a few thousand years worth of material. Lets round it all up and learn one extra ritual the two titans of philosophy agree on that can make you - and others - very happySum upHeres how Stoboo can make you happyLife isnt the problem. Your interpretations are You might think This post is long. It sucks that I have to read all this. Or This post is long. So much to look forward to Post is the same. Your interpretation created those feelings.Step back Be more impulsive isnt advice you hear a lot.Accept Nor do you hear you should live in denial. The mind requires training Yes, that means work. We know being impulsive and denying reality arent good but we do them anyway. Bad habits are hard to break. Meditate on that. Literally.Feeling is the only way through Youll never eliminate your personal basket of neuroses - but you dont have to act on them either. Make room for them on the couch, feel them, and they will dissipate.Focus on the present Regret might be back there. Anxiety might be up ahead. But what is really bothering you right now? So spend more time in the now.People are ridiculous. Love them anyway The only people who are perfect and always make sense are people you dont know very well. We all take our turn as the crazy uncle at Thanksgiving dinner. Treat people as old friends and often they will become just that.So whats the final step on The Great Way of the Stoboo? Gratitude.Gratitude toward others and gratitude for this life with all its ups and downs. Because the ups and downs are your interpretations, remember? So accept it all, love it all, be grateful for it all. From The Daily StoicIt is easy to praise providence for anything that may happen if you have two qualities a complete view of what has actually happened in each instance and a sense of gratitude. Without gratitude what is the point of seeing, and without seeing what is the object of gratitude? - Epictetus, Discourses, 1.6.1 2From Mindfu lness A Practical Guide to AwakeningThe Buddha called gratitude one of the most beautiful and rare qualities in the world. You might choose to read all the research papers on the epic happiness-promoting effects of gratitude and you might choose not to, but for gods sake dont drop them on your foot. 3 in 4 parents believe robots will deny their kids a future at work
3 in 4 parents believe robots will deny their kids a future at work3 in 4 parents believe robots will deny their kids a future at workThe robot takeover is on the horizon and were not prepared to face it. Two-thirds of U.S. adults believe that robots will be doing our jobs in the next 50 years, but in an interesting twist of hubris, 80% of those adults also think that their own personal jobs at least are safe in the upcoming robot purge. So todays adults are aware of the danger but think they will be passed over. But what does Americas future think about automation?3 in 4 parents concerned about childs future with automated worldIf you believe that children are our future, these future leaders are less optimistic about their fates. This past June and July, ORC International conducted a survey of over a 1,000 parents of school-aged children and teenagers for Junior Achievement USA about what they thought about robots and the global economy.Parents are overwhelmingly worried. Around 77% of parents said they were concerned about their childs ability to have a successful job when they grew up because of global competition and automation. The teenagers who would be facing this future felt the same and 77% of them also said they were concerned about automation hampering their job prospects.Junior Achievement thinks that the solution to this anxiety is more school. Many of the entry-level jobs we know today wont be around in the next decade, and many of the jobs oftomorrowhavent even been conceived of yet, Jack Kosakowski, CEO of Junior Achievement USA, said. Its important we encourage our young people to explore post-secondary education, whether that be a university, community college, or a technical or trade school. Having some level of technical training is going to be critical for future career success. It doesnt take a particularly sophisticated robot to replace youEducation and degrees may help some of us avoid an artificially-intelligent takeover, but automation is a global problem. It turns out nobodys safe. In an open letter to the United Nations, top business leaders, including Teslas Elon Musk, sounded the alarm on killer robots that would cause the third revolution in warfare. And as computational science researcherTaha Yesseri noted, it doesnt take a sophisticated killer robot to cause alarm. The dumb ones should worry us too.The bigger the ordnungsprinzip becomes and the more autonomous each bot is, the more complex and hence unpredictable the future behavior of the system will be, Yesseri said about simple Wikipedia bots. Those unpredictable rogue Wikipedia bots are just causing problems with editing content online. But Yesseri uses them as an example of whats to come self-driving cars and killer robots. In a future system with a large number of very sophisticated robots, the unexpected behavior could go beyond our imagination, he said. The individual concern for parents, kids, and researchers is that they could take our jobs and render us useless. But a larger concern for us all is that bots autonomous unpredictable nature could prove lethal.

Learn About the Airspeed Indicator
Learn About the Airspeed IndicatorLearn About the Airspeed IndicatorAn airplanes speed is measured in knots or miles per hour on an airspeed indicator inside the cockpit of the aircraft. The airspeed indicator is one of the basic aircraft arbeitsgerts and is of importance to pilots because adherence to safe operating speeds is imperative. Each airplane has its own specified airspeeds that the pilot needs to be aware of. Pilots need to know the speeds at which an airplane will take off, land, stall, and otherwise operate safely during different phases of flight.? The airspeed indicator works by comparing dynamic pressure (ram air pressure) and static pressure. This article pertains to conventional airspeed instruments as opposed to newer computerized systems found on technologically advanced aircraft. Airspeed indications on modern, computerized primary flight displays depict airspeed differently than described in this articleand are computed using modern sensor technology. Airspeed c an also be obtained from a GPS unit in equipped aircraft. How it Works The airspeed indicator is part of the pitot-static system, a differential pressure system that measures both dynamic air pressure from the pitot tube and static pressure from a static port. Inside the casing of the instrument is a sealed diaphragm that receives both static and dynamic pressure from the pitot tube. Static pressure is also measured from inside the casing but outside of the diaphragm. The static pressures from both inside and outside of the diaphragm cancel each other out, leaving a measurement of total dynamic pressure, or ram air pressure. As the airplane accelerates, the dynamic pressure from the pitot tube increases, causing the diaphragm to expand. Through mechanical linkage, this measurement of increased airspeed is shown in the airspeed indicator needle. Types of Airspeeds Indicated Airspeed IAS is the airspeed read directly from the airspeed indicator.Calibrated Airspeed CAS is the a ctual speed of the aircraft through the air, after being adjusted for position and instrument errors. The calibrated airspeed (as it compares to indicated airspeed) can be found in the aircrafts operating handbook.True Airspeed TAS is calibrated (or equivalent) airspeed adjusted for nonstandard pressure and temperature.Equivalent Airspeed EAS is calibrated airspeed adjusted for compressibility errors. Groundspeed The actual speed of the airplane over the ground, measured in knots or miles per hour. Groundspeed is true airspeed corrected for the effects of wind and is useful when flight planning.Mach Number The Mach number is the true airspeed of an aircraft as it is compared to the speed of sound. The speed of sound is known as Mach 1.0. High-speed aircraft have Mach meters instead of airspeed indicators. Markings and Limitations Small, single-engine airplanes use color-coded airspeed markings to help the pilot operate safely and efficiently. These markings are helpful because t hey depict crucial aircraft speeds, known as V-speeds. White Arc The white arc on airspeed indicators depicts the normal flap operating range. Inside of the white arc, full flaps can be used. The top of the white arc indicates the highest speed at which flaps can be extended during flight, and operating at speeds outside of the white arc with flaps down can be unsafe.Green Arc The green arc on an airspeed indicator represents the normal operating range of the airplane.Yellow Arc The yellow arc is a cautionary range of airspeeds. It is advised that pilots only operate in the yellow arc in calm air. Flying at speeds in the caution range during turbulence can be unsafe. Red Line At the top of the yellow arc is a red line, which represents the maximum allowable airspeed for the airplane. Airspeed Indicator Errors An airspeed indicator will be ineffective if there is a blockage of the pitot tube or static port or both. A blockage is most commonly the result of insects, water, or ice. If the pitot tube and its drain hole become blocked, the airspeed indicator acts like an altimeter, showing an increase in airspeed when the airplane climbs to a higher altitude and a decrease in airspeed during a descent. If the pitot tube becomes blocked and the drain hole remains open, the ram air pressure will bleed out through the drain hole, leaving only static pressure in the pitot tube. The new static pressure in the pitot tube would be equivalent to the static pressure from the static port, and the airspeed indicator would read 0. If the static port becomes blocked (but not the pitot tube), the airspeed indicator will work, but it will be inaccurate. Since the static air becomes trapped inside the casing at the altitude where the instrument stopped working, a climb will cause a lower than normal airspeed. When flying below the altitude at which the blockage occurred, the airspeed indicator will read higher than normal. Emergency Operation Some airplanes are equipped wi th pitot tube heating elements. Pitot heat is used as a preventative measure to stop ice from forming over the pitot tube and is activated when flying in cold weather. Many small aircraft are equipped with an alternate static source that can be activated by pulling a lever in the cockpit in the event that a static port becomes blocked. The new alternate static pressure is a lower pressure than outside new age pressure during flight, which results in slightly inaccurate instrument indications, but it provides a good enough indication to maintain positive aircraft control.

Maximizing the Utility of Employee Assistance Programs
Maximizing the Utility of Employee Assistance ProgramsMaximizing the Utility of Employee Assistance ProgramsMaximizing the Utility of Employee Assistance ProgramsAttachmentMaximizing the Utility of EAPs PDFMaximizing the Utility of EAPs RecordingNoteYoull need Adobe Reader to view the PDF file above.Download Adobe Reader.Wednesday, June 18, 2014To employers, the value proposition of an employee assistance program (EAP) is based on the understanding that employees with unresolved mental health and emotional well-being concerns often have troubles in their professional and personal lives that ultimately impact a companys bottom line.Historically, EAP providers have used a variety of metrics to illustrate their ability to resolve or mitigate these concerns, such as employee utilization rates, referrals to external resources, satisfaction surveys or website usage. While these measurements may be effective ways to identify the level of awareness that an EAP has within a clients employee p opulation, they dont truly address the impact that the EAP had on the individuals who used the program.New research by CuraLinc Healthcare, a leading provider of employee assistance programs, suggests that EAP models with the proper construct and focus can facilitate meaningful and lasting behavior change that leads to a decrease in absenteeism and an increase in productivity. The study, Outcomes and Impact Maximizing the Utility of Employee Assistance Programs, also shows that an EAP has the ability to improve the health of employees who present with depression and alcohol abuse.Using a proprietary assessment and follow-up process to measure baselines and outcomes from EAP participants, the CuraLinc study uncovered a number of outstanding results that would be explored in the session. These results came from an analysis of over 1,900 EAP cases between January 1 and December 31, 2013.Presented bySean FogartyPresident, CuralLinc HealthcareJohn KamilisVice President, LCPC, CEAP, DCC, C uraLinc HealthcareAnne MortonVice President of Client Services, CuraLinc Healthcare

Report 85% of Baby Boomers plan to work into their 70s (and even 80s)
Report 85% of Baby Boomers plan to work into their 70s (and even 80s)Report 85% of Baby Boomers plan to work into their 70s (and even 80s)Theres no doubt about it many Baby Boomers simply arent ready to retire. Either they dont have enough money saved up yet, or they simply arent ready to leave the working world behind.Deloitte Insights took a look at what this means for the workforce, which will now absorb five generations of workers. Some organizations will be mora prepared than others for people working well past retirement age. Deloitte examined who our oldest workers are, what they need, what drives them, as well as how employers can create jobs that utilize the valuable set of skills they bring to the workplace. The current volume and rapid increase of people remaining well past traditional retirement age is unprecedented, according to the report. By 2024, 1 in 4 U.S. workers will be 55 or older, a major increase in mature workers.Eight-five percent of the Baby Boomer population plans to work until their 70s and even 80s, according to the U.S. Senates 2017 Special Committee on Aging report, Americas Aging Workforce. While finances are a very real concern for Boomers, there are many older workers creating second careers, or working bridge jobs, simply because they value working and staying connected to the wider world. In a Deloitte survey of 5,000 U.S. workers ages 55-64, making an impact scored higher than money in the category of what motivated them to work hard at their job, with 52% choosing making an impact, and 42% choosing monetary rewards. An additional 42% chose having a flexible work schedule.Pushing past negativesThere are negative misconceptions around older workers that must be dealt with. One persistent idea is that Boomers are standing in the way of younger talent moving up in an organization. In Deloittes2018Global Human Capital Trendsreport, 15 percent of respondents believed that older employees were an impediment to rising talent. However, focusing on older workers very real, positive attributes can cancel out the negative messages.Older workers tend to be more engaged, and engagement has been shown to increase with age. This makes them more valuable than Millennials in that category, who tend to have low engagement levels. Their long work experience means that their work product is generally better than their younger counterparts. They also have better social skills and good organizational citizenship showing up to work on time, listening, displaying a positive attitude, etc.Deloitte described six personas that make up the over-60 workplace, based on their primary motive for working.Bridge worker (25-30%) Part-time with a new employer. The bridge workers motivation is usually financial. This group represents the largest percentage of older workers.Alumni worker (20%) Someone who comes out of retirement, or comes back to the company part-time as a mentor. This type of worker may need flexible hours, but still wants t o do meaningful work.Tenured worker (15-20%) Also called phased retirement, this worker often wants to leave something behind at their organization, and pass down knowledge to others, and retire at their own pace.Gig worker (5-7%) Gig workers are most often motivated by flexibility and find jobs through freelancing platforms.Encore worker (9-12%) Doing volunteer work or civic service as a second career, the work is the reward in itself.Self-employment (9-12%) The self-employed are often either continuing an existing business, or chasing the dream of making something from nothing and the satisfaction of owning something. For these workers and others like them, Deloitte suggests that employers use mature workers as mentors for younger workers, design phased retirement plans to allow workers to retire flexibly and intentionally, and find a way to re-skill older workers, like the apprenticeship model.

How to get back into exercising regularly after a long break
How to get back into exercising regularly after a long break How to get back into exercising regularly after a long break Even the most committed fitness fans find that life sometimes gets in the way of athletic greatness. A change in location, circumstances, or your body can all force a break in the routine you worked so hard to lay out. And when you are ready, coming back to something you used to be able to do with ease can feel more emotionally daunting than the first time you tried it. Hereâs how to get yourself mentally and physically back in the game.1. Set reasonable expectationsExpecting yourself to instantly hit your previous level is a bad idea for your body and your morale. âTrying to go all-out your first session back in the gym is a recipe for injury and frustration, so avoid that temptation,â advises Greg Pignataro, a personal trainer with Grindset Fitness who specializes in strength and conditioning. âWhen trying to get back into the swing of things, start at a level thatâs no more difficult than a four or five out of 10. Starting at this manageable level will help preve nt you from feeling overwhelmed. Slowly and consistently ramp up the challenge over your next few weeks. Do this, and youâll be back at your old level of performance - or beyond it - before you know it.âPignataro should know: He suffered what he calls âa freak soccer injuryâ that left him unable to play soccer or work out for six months. âI coped by focusing on what I could do pain-free, which was mainly hip mobility work, core strengthening, and glute strengthening,â he remembers. âI spent a few minutes performing those activities nearly every day for about seven months.â This hard work eventually helped him ultimately lift more than he did before the injury, and go back to playing soccer. âI fully understand peopleâs frustrations when lifeâs unexpected circumstances force them to stop working out for a while,â Pignataro adds. âBut as Iâve seen firsthand, setbacks donât mean you have to give up!â2. Go slowYou donât even have to do the same kind o f exercise you were doing before, especially if it was high intensity. âConsistently doing anything physical and/or simply going to the gym can be a fantastic ârestarting point,ââ Pignataro encourages. âOnce youâve turned physical activity back into a habit, feel free to set more challenging goals. However, cut yourself a break at the beginning by aiming to make your goal completely controllable: Work out a certain number of times per week, regardless of what it is you do.âFor example, if you used to be a runner but got out of the habit, try walking first. âYou donât need to go all out, just break a sweat and maybe breathe a little hard,â advises Meghan Stevenson, a certified running coach with the Road Runners of America and founder of Your Best Run, an encouraging coaching website. âI would recommend doing 20 minutes to start. You can go outside to do this walking or run-walking - I suggest one-minute intervals of each - or you can go to the gym and do it on a machine. Be sure to stretch! After a week or two of that, you can start to extend the time or intensity, and even start lifting weights or doing bodyweight strength exercises.â Itâs not how fast youâre going, itâs the fact that you are going.3. Remember why you used to enjoy itLetâs talk about the biggest off-putting thing about going back to exercise: You know how much it hurts! Memories of burning muscles, breathlessness, and soreness for days can be a major obstacle when it comes to forcing yourself back into the habit when you could just, well, not. âMost often thatâs because running is hard more often than it feels good,â admits Stevenson. âBut when running feels good, it feels REALLY good!â She and Pignataro point to these holdups as another excellent reason to be careful when setting yourself challenges in your new routines.âOne of the primary principles of training is âprogressive overload,ââ Pignataro explains. âThis basically means tha t our bodies wonât change unless we challenge them, but the challenge must be gradual and manageable.â In other words, yes, exercise is supposed to be harder than not exercising - but itâs most effective when the goals youâre trying to achieve are manageable enough that you wonât be put off from even trying. If you go too hard too soon, youâll likely drop out (or possibly re-injure yourself), whereas setting small goals will eventually lead you to something bigger. âAiming to increase the amount of weight you can successfully lift for a given exercise by five pounds a week, for instance, may not seem like much, but over the course of months to a year, it makes an enormous difference,â Pignataro says.4. Knowing you can quit and come back will make you healthierA lot of athletes worry that taking a break means losing fitness theyâve built up, but sometimes having to stop is inevitable. Knowing that you can pause your routine and come back to it will ultimately make you a better athlete and a healthier person. Stevenson has personal experience here: In 2017 she had to drop out of the Big Sur marathon after a serious respiratory infection knocked her out for over two weeks of peak training. âI was upset to miss the race, but more upset that I essentially had to start over from scratch,â she says. âMy speed and fitness came back within a couple of weeks, but I definitely had to relax my expectations and allow my body to heal.âReluctance to give your body the break it sometimes needs can be a sign that you need to reassess your true motivation for working out. âI think a lot of women are concerned that weâre going to instantly gain weight the moment we stop exercising or if we donât work out super hard, and neither of those beliefs is true,â Stevenson assures us. âWe need to be more attentive to our bodies and the messages theyâre trying to tell us. A day, a week, or even a month off isnât the end of the world. We can come ba ck from all of that better than before, but we need to take a longer-term approach to our health. Slowly losing weight and slowly gaining fitness over time is the most sustainable way for us to be healthy and, ultimately, to be happy.â5. Keep tryingWe saved the best news for last: Regaining fitness is easier than finding it in the first place! âOur brains code the movement patterns necessary for success in activities [as we learn them] and store them for future use,â Pignataro explains. âItâs similar to how you donât need to completely relearn how to ride a bike after months or years of not going anywhere near one. Your body will remember how to do all activities it had previously been capable of performing. It may take a few sessions to âshake the dust off,â but itâs possible to return to a previous level of proficiency fairly rapidly.â Itâs going to be slow at first, but with time, determination, and some achievable goals, youâll be back on track - or even further ahead - than you were before your well-deserved break. This article was originally published on Brit + Co.

About The Military Criminal History Moral Waivers
About The Military Criminal History Moral Waivers About The Military Criminal History Moral Waivers Criminal history (moral) waivers are decided on a case by case basis and depend on several individual factors. Depending upon the needs of the military, moral waivers are either easier to obtain or impossible. In the end it comes down to the number of candidates needed and the number of candidates getting approved to join the military who do not need a waiver. No two cases are the same.?? Each of the services have criminal history standards that determine which offenses (or combination of offenses) are disqualifying for enlistment: ArmyAir ForceNavyMarine Corps If you fail to meet the above listed standards, you would need a moral waiver in order to join the military. Moral Waivers If you need a waiver, that means you are ineligible to join the military. The waiver is the process of you asking the service to make an exception in your particular case. The recruiter is the first step. Only a military recruiter can initiate a moral waiver request. Keep in mind this is the recruiters decision, not yours. There is no right to have a moral waiver processed. If the recruiter doesnt think there is a good chance of approval, he/she doesnt have to waste time by submitting one on your behalf.? Finding a recruiter willing to work with you is typically the issue. Most people give up after the first NO response from a recruiter, but there have been many successful waivers passed because a recruiter was willing to work with a candidate who was mature, respectful, and persistent with a never give up attitude. These characteristics can go a long way to getting a recruiter to work on your behalf up the chain of command. One primary consideration is the current recruiting needs of the service branch. If they are doing well meeting their recruiting numbers, the chances of waiver consideration/approval go down. If the service is struggling to meet their recruiting needs, the chances of waiver consideration/approval goes up. The Army has the reputation of approving the most moral waivers. The Air Force and Coast Guard approve the fewest. The Navy and Marine Corps fall somewhere in between. However, thats not always the case. There have been times, during extremely good recruiting periods, where the Army wont consider any applicant who needs a moral waiver, at all.? During times of downsizing of the military, not being at war, and when the civilian economy slow, the need of fewer recruits meets receiving more applications - this is the formula for fewer waivers getting approved. However, the opposite situation will improve the chances of waiver approval. Another important factor is how attractive of an applicant you are to the service. Generally, those with high ASVAB AFQT scores and/or a high school diploma/college credits have a higher chance of favorable waiver consideration than a candidate who scores low on the ASVAB, and/or has a GED. Other factors include the seriousness of the criminal offense(s), how old you were when it happened, and how much time has passed since then. There are some categories where I feel safe to say are virtually never considered for waivers: Adult felonies. The services almost never (Im tempted to say never) consider waivers for felony convictions that happened as an adult.Juvenile felonies that involved violence.Offenses involving the sale or transfer of illegal drugs.Sex offenses.Domestic violence that falls under the Lautenberg Amendment. The 1996 Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968 makes it unlawful for anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor of domestic violence to possess firearms. If you cant carry a firearm, youre not worth very much to the military. The waiver process is very subjective. More serious offenses require a higher level of approval in the recruiting chain-of-command than less serious offenses. However, regardless, a human being (usually a commanding officer) is going to make the final decision, and humans are usually more subjective than they are objective. For example, lets say your offense was burglary, and the final approval authority some colonel had his house robbed. Do you think hes going to look kindly on a burglary waiver? Appeals If your waiver is disapproved, there is no appeal process. Several people have asked me about writing their congressman or senator, and you can certainly do so. But, in my opinion, its a waste of time when it comes to disapproval of waivers. Congressional inquiries can be beneficial if the military does something wrong (against the law or against regulations), but the military does not have to approve (or even consider) your waiver. If your congress-critter does make an inquiry, the military is simply going to say, we looked into it, and decided not to approve/consider the waiver, and that will be the end of it. One thing you can do is to check with a different service branch. Waiver decisions are only valid for the branch who made it. In other words, if the Air Force disapproved your moral waiver request, the Navy still might approve it.

Despite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the day
Despite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the day Despite popular belief, this meal should actually be biggest of the day A recent preliminary week-long endocrinology study set to premiere at the Endocrine Societyâs Annual meeting this Saturday in New Orleans, explores the correlation eating later shares with a larger body mass index and body fat.Adnin Zaman, of The University of Colorado School of Medicine and colleagues, analyzed a group of individuals for the study, 90% of which were women with an average age of about 36.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Laddersâ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! The study began by introducing a trial that limited the hours in which individuals were allowed to consume calories. Each participant was given a little electronic device to strap to their thighs that monitored their activity and sedentary period. They were also equipped with an Actiwatch, which examines sleep and wake patterns. The individuals were also tasked with uploading pictures of their meals on an app called Meat Logger. All parti cipants received an average of seven hours of sleep and consumed calories over an eleven hour period, with most of the latest photo entries coming in around 8 pm.The research concluded that individuals that ate later were associated with higher weight gain and greater body mass index. Although the endocrinology study focused primarily on women the researchers believe the data could easily apply to men.In fact, this development adds to research that uncovered similar conclusions. Experts from Brigham University tested the well-observed theory through an experiment of their own on a group of young men. They tracked participants for two weeks with a control period. During the two weeks, the young men were not allowed to consume calories between 7 pm and 6 am.In addition to losing weight during the experiment and gaining weight during the control period (the period of time wherein individuals went back to their normal diets and eating times), the results found participants consumed 238 f ewer calories when they adhered to the time/eating restrictions provided by the researchers of the study. To be clear, the endocrinologists that motioned the theory, set to be presented later this week, did not specify a particular time that individuals wishing to lose weight should curb their eating. While the researchers behind the Brigham study tested 7 pm as a cut-off time, the data links the unhealthy habits that accompany snacking after dinner rather than the time itself. But as we know the foods we consume after dinner are rarely composed of healthy options. Why does late night snacking come with so much weight gain?A paper published in February in the journal Current Biology further expounded upon how poor sleep cycles promote unhealthy eating habits. We simply use less energy to digest food as the day goes on, so that instead of burning calories we more readily convert them into fat.Lona Sandon Ph.D. additionally occasions hormonal changes associated with times of day to influence weight gain.On mass, if you stay within your recommended calorie intake, itâs possible to maintain a healthy weight if youâre a nocturnal snacker. Eating later just tends to put individuals at risk for over-eating-and over-eating particularly unhealthy foods at that.Sandon suggests we eat a bigger lunch to combat late night cravings, saying, âMaking the lunch meal the largest meal of the day, with at least a little something for breakfast, has worked for some of my clients to be able to cut back at night or be satisfied with a light dinner.âHer recommendation doesnât stand alone. Writer Kelly Burch made lunch the biggest meal of the day for a month and reported her findings in a piece published by Prevention.com.Burch found her self eating less, experiencing fewer crashes and getting better sleep as a direct result of the change. The results were so promising Burch intends to make it a staple to her dietary routine, explaining,âEating a bigger meal in the midd le of the day just felt healthier than having a heaping plate of food a few hours before bed. That combined with the benefits to my work productivity and evening routine means that eating a larger lunch and lighter dinner is definitely a habit I will keep,â she said. You might also enjoy⦠New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklinâs daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

What Your Chatty Co-workers Wants You to Know -The Muse
What Your Chatty Co-workers Wants You to Know -The Muse What Your Chatty Co-workers Wants You to Know You can hear his voice all the way from the elevator bay three floors below your office. And you know that based on your previous history with this person that heâll be stopping by your desk at least 35 times this afternoon to chat you up about the latest in reality television, the shirt he just bought, and a cocktail he âdiscoveredâ last night. This chatty co-worker means well, and you know it. After all, he is just trying to be friendly. Except youâre just trying to get a few things done before the entire day flies by. As much as this guy likes to talk, there are a few things he wonât say aloud that heâll want you know about him. I know because I used to be him- and hereâs what I couldâve told all my co-workers- before I got the office chatterbox reputation. 1. Weâre Really Excited to Talk to You Because We Enjoy Your Company Iâm sure that plenty of my former colleagues would tell you that I could talk until Iâm blue in the face. But hereâs the thing- Iâve also worked with people who would say, âRich? That guy only spoke when he needed to get by me.â The truth is that if Iâm talking to you, itâs because I actually like you. Hereâs a fun fact: Some of my closest friends are people Iâve worked with at some point or another. And I sometimes need the reminder that even though we are friends, when weâre at the office, I need to be a little bit more in work mode. 2. You Can Tell Us to Go Away I know- it can seem like an impossible task to get the office talker to let you get back to what youâre working on sometimes. And trust me, Iâve been the one whoâs made it difficult for someone else to end a friendly conversation in the office kitchen. But because Iâve been âthat guy,â Iâm sure of one thing: If you really need to get back to doing something, donât be afraid to say (nicely) that you have to step away because you have a lot to get done before the end of the day. Unless the person is nothing but a big bag of wind, the odds are that he will totally understand. In fact, if you find a nice way to let the person down, you might also be doing her a favor. After all, she probably has a long to-do list of her own waiting for her. 3. Sometimes We Keep Talking Because Weâre Trying to Impress You This is one of the hardest confessions Iâll make. Sometimes I would get caught up in the fact that I worked with some really incredible people. And because those people were smart, talented, and incredibly nice to hang out with, I wanted to make sure that I was pulling my weight in the conversation. The need to do that leads people like me to be overly nice chatty or extra ambitious in trying to prove that we know what weâre doing. And ultimately, that means our gears spin in endless circles until everyone is exhausted and looking for an excuse to do anything but talk to us. And as annoyed as you probably are by this, we all wish you knew how agonizing this was for the people-pleaser in all of us. It would be easy to look at someone with a big mouth at the office and think theyâre in love with the sound of their own voice. But there are very real challenges to being a talker, especially when itâs not part of your job. And on behalf of that person everywhere, I hope that knowing why itâs not easy for us either will help you have a little more tolerance for those times when we simply cannot stop talking about the dessert we had last night. Researcher Focus - Advanced Materials Silica Aerogels
Researcher Focus - Advanced Materials Silica Aerogels Researcher Focus - Advanced Materials Silica Aerogels Researcher Focus: Advanced Materials Interview conducted by Paul Glanville Kashif Nawaz, a Research Assistant at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign talks about Silica Aerogels and Metallic Foams for Humidity Control in Energy-Efficient Buildings > Learn more about this research through the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings: Effect of Catalyst Used in the Sol-Gel Process on the Microstructure and Adsorption/Desorption Performance of Silica Aerogels. Tell us about your research on silica aerogels The idea is to use the silica aerogels as desiccant for dehumidification applications. There are a number of desiccants available and silica aerogels are one of them. Silica aerogels have been in the industry and they are using them for insulators, because they are really bad conductors of heat transfer. They are using the cryogenic doors and there are some other applications for these materials. But nobody has really looked at the manufacturing process. This is in fact one part of my research, and what we have done here is to look at the recipe to find out, what are the different ingredients and whats their role in determining the final microstructure of the aerogel. There are three main ingredients; a catalyst, a solvent, and then a precipitator. We conducted a study to see the affect of these three different ingredients. It turned out that the catalyst is probably the most important one, it affects the structure a lot. Normally we use acid catalyst or basic catalysts, and I used a variety of catalysts. In fact, I made an aerogel sample of about 72 aerogel samples using different recipes, but it turned out that when I was preparing the catalyst the microstructure varied from very small, highly porous structure to relatively large pores. Then because we are interested in using them for the dehumidification application, its important to know what the mass transfer characteristics of these materials are. In order to determine the diffusion coefficients we came up with an instrument and automated method. You have to expose your sample to a certain humidity and then you have to wait until the equilibrium is reached. But when you use the dynamic reabsorption apparatus, which we used, you can actually see the complete process within a few days. And then you can essentially use some kind of modeling to come up with the diffusion coefficient. For all different types of samples we determined the diffusion coefficient using the dynamic reabsorption technique, and it turned out that the different silica aerogels prepared by different catalysts they have different diffusion coefficients, and sometimes it was a difference of order of magnitude. It shows that essentially if you really want to use the silica aerogels for a dehumidification application, as a desiccant, you need to use the right recipe. You need to have the right kind of ingredients. This paper is essentially determining the effective diffusion coefficients for silica aerogels and somehow relating it to the recipe which you are using to manufacture them. Essentially the next step of this research was coating the silica aerogels on the metal foams. Previously we conducted a study to determine empirical performance of the metal foams as a heat exchanger. I have some research experience using those as burners. Well, they are really interesting materials and we got really promising results. In fact, in comparison to the state-of-the-art heat exchanger design - when you use a metal form and you compare the performance you can get up to 150, 200 percent increase in the heat transfer rate with a slight, mild increase in pressure drop, but essentially you can vary the geometry and you can get the desired performance. The idea of combining these two research programs was to come up with a device which consists of aerogel coated metal foams, and then you can use the device as a mass exchanger, to absorb the moisture. These kinds of devices which will be really compact, and we have been working on some kind of prototype. We have already conducted some modeling of aerogel coated metal forms. They can replace some of the desiccants used for the dehumidification applications, and essentially you will be saving a lot in terms of volume, and the efficiency of mass transfer will be really high. To let you know why we have chosen the metal foams as a substrate for these silica aerogels, they are a very low thermal conductor - they are good insulators. So the metal foams they have a very large surface area to volume ratio. It can go up to 900 to 2,800 meters square per meter cubed depending upon what kind of porosity of the metal foam you are using. They are available in standard, like five pores per inch, 10 pores per inch, 20 pores per inch and 40 pores per inch. When you have such a large surface area essentially you can have a very thin layer of silica aerogel on the metal foam, 200 microns or 300 microns. The effect of the bad insulator, or being a bad conductor, that effect is diminished when you have a very thin layer. And when you have the substrate - another reason for using the substrate is you basically want to take over the heat of absorption by the coolant flowing through the tubes of the mass exchanger. When you have a very thin layer essentially you can take away the heat of absorption through the coolant flowing through the tubes of the mass exchanger, and when you want to desorb - get rid of the humidity, you can provide the hot fluid on the tube side and it will essentially provide the heat of desorption, it will remove the moisture. Essentially its a cycle, its a cyclic process. More like frosting and defrosting in a heat exchanger, you know heat pumps, where you have about one hour of frosting and then you can have a cycle of defrosting for about 15 minutes. And the other reason for which we think that this will work is the diffusion coefficient of absorption is that we found that the heat of the diffusion coefficient under absorption is different than desorption. In fact, when you are desorbing the diffusion coefficient is approximately two times higher than absorption, which happened because of the microstructure change. And this is really good because essentially for having a larger desorption diffusion coefficient over desorption you can get rid of the moisture which was absorbed on the silica aerogel rather quickly. If you have a device which has a certain type of metal foam, and you have a 100 micron layer of silica aerogel, your absorption time for the 90 percent saturation would be about 45 to 50 minutes. And then because of the better desorption coefficient, mass diffusion coefficient, you can get rid of all that absorbed humidity within 5 to 10 minutes. Its more like a frosting/defrosting process, but essentially the idea is that you can have your dehumidifying device really compact, and it has the potential to replace some of the existing technologies. Do you have a sense for how this technology, aerogel onto a metal foam or just on its own, is going to be utilized in a dehumidification system or something different than that? When working as a member of the Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Center we are more interested in the practical side of research. We had this issue, where I had a discussion with many of the sponsors, from industry, who are sponsoring this project, they questioned how suitable, or in terms of economics, how viable this idea is, to have this kind of device. Right now there are some issues, mainly because of the cost of the metal foams, because they are really expensive. Actually, there are only a few manufacturers in the US, or even in the world, but there are only two or three major manufacturers. They are more like a monopoly so they can always sell at their own price. But once the use of this kind of material is more common, essentially, were talking about 10 years from now, I am quite sure that the price for the metal foam will go down and we will be able to sort of beat the criteria in terms of economics as well. But right now for specialized applications, the wait is really a critical issue. These things are definitely a better option than the existing technologies. Im quite hopeful that this technology has some potential. Your field of research relates to energy and thats one of ASMEs three strategic areas in the HVAC/humidity control side of things. Are there ways in which you feel that you tailored your work towards ASMEs goals or is it just a happy coincidence? Well essentially - my project is related to energy efficiency, and we are building devices that can work to save energy. We want to perform the same sort of work at the minimum cost in terms of energy fuel. I am also kind of interested in renewable energy. Im quite near the completion of my Masters in nuclear engineering. Reading conference papers and attending ASME conferences, has helped me to tailor my ideas. If I want to do some kind of contribution in the renewable area, where should I go? But, I think my work relates to both. Im also looking at the broader prospect of when you have really the big renewable energy projects such as wind energy or solar energy. What has it been like becoming the engineer that you are right now? Well to be honest after my high school, I thought that when you are essentially in a specific area, lets say if you are an electrical engineer, or you are a mechanical engineer, your area of focus will be just limited to that specific divisions. But it turned out that things can go much beyond that. And when you talk about mechanical engineering and ASME is not like somehow exclusive to mechanical engineers. Essentially, ASME has helped me to realize that in order to come up with some kind of fabrication you need to know more than the mechanical engineering, hard-core mechanical engineering. On my own research, well its essentially a dehumidifying application. I started the analysis of these devices, which is essentially a role of mechanical engineering, but I also did some material characterization. When I was preparing the samples, mine was more like a chemist, you know I was dealing with different catalysts. And when I was studying the material imagery of these materials it was more like a material scientist. What sort of advice would you give to early career engineers in terms of using ASME, or other avenues for mentoring, or finding ways to get involved? You have to essentially get involved. Working on your own [independently] theres a good chance that you might get stuck, or you might develop a habit of going in a specific direction. But when you interact with people and you go to the organizations like ASME, ASHRAE, you broaden your knowledge about the research. You can get a broader view of the different technical skills, the people involved, thats a very important. There are different ways to tackle the same problem. You can actually talk to the people, you let them know about your research, you learn about their research, you get a broader idea of the research even if youre talking about the same specific area. Research Assistant, Kashif Nawaz has published papers on The ASME Digital Collection, including the following from the 2013 ASME Congress Proceedings (IMECE2013): Effect of Catalyst Used in the Sol-Gel Process on the Microstructure and Adsorption/Desorption Performance of Silica Aerogels.

How to Handle a Coffee Interview
How to Handle a Coffee Interview How to Handle a Coffee Interview An informal meeting over a cup of coffee has replaced first-round interviews for some employers, especially those who are recruiting prospects for employment opportunities rather than interviewing for a specific position. Whats the best way to handle an invitation for coffee from a hiring manager? What should you wear? What do you need to bring? Who pays? Whats the next step if the meeting goes well? Heres the scoop on informal interviews held at a coffee shop or restaurant. Tips for Handling a Coffee Interview Hiring managers and potential employers often begin with this less formal approach in the early stages of the interviewing process. The meeting is set up more like an informational conversation so that both the employer and applicant can get familiar without creating a more serious interview. Even though its only a cup of coffee, it could be a stepping stone to a new job, so its important to take the time to prepare. Recruiters host these sessions at a coffee shop instead of the office for several reasons. For the recruiter, its a way to meet a potential employee on a more casual basis to determine if there could be a role for the person at the company. For the candidate, its a way to learn more about a company without having to participate in a formal interview, at least at the start. Do Some Research Before Your Meeting It is important to prepare for your coffee meeting just like you would for an interview in a more formal setting. Researching the company and its mission, services, and recent achievements will prepare you to engage fully in a dialogue. Furthermore, you should be ready to talk about yourself and what youâre looking for in your career, and how you could add value to the company. This is your time to make a great first impression so be ready to explain how you can help the company. What to Do Before You Interview Confirm the exact location, including the cross streets or corner. Theres a Starbucks on nearly every street in New York City, and the same holds true for many other national and international chains. For example, confirm that youre meeting at the XYZ diner on the South East corner of Main Street and 10th Avenue. Make sure you get the interviewers cell phone number, so you can call or text them in case youre delayed. Also, be sure to ask how you will recognize the person youre meeting with and let them know what you look like, or what youll be wearing. What to Wear Because of the nature of the meeting, itâs not necessary to dress in formal business attire. Typically, business casual wear is appropriate, so consider the meeting place before you purchase a new suit. Still, you donât want to be sloppy â" your clothes should be neat and clean. What to Bring Itâs always advantageous to have several copies of your resume and a business card if you have one. Also, bring a list of references. You will likely want to take notes, so it never hurts to bring a pen and a pad of paper to write on. Ordering Your Coffee If you get there ahead of the recruiter, you can either wait for them to order or go ahead and grab a drink yourself. However, the recruiter will typically pick up the tab. When youâre taken out by a recruiter for a coffee interview, thereâs no need to worry about paying. Itâs better not to order food during this kind of meeting. While the interview itself is more casual, you will be conversing back and forth with the hiring manager and food will just be a distraction. The less there is to spill, the better. Focus on the Interview and Interviewer It may be noisy in a public place due to distractions such as loud customers, piped in music, and waitstaff coming and going. Try to focus on the interviewer as best you can. Keep the interview focused, as well, by staying on topic. Even if you order a light snack to go with your coffee or tea, dont think about the food, think about what you need to say to make a good impression. Another common distraction is one that you might bring upon yourself, your cell phone. A ringing cell phone or pinging text message will distract you as well as the interviewer. Be sure to put your phone on mute or vibrate and tuck it away in your purse, bag or pocket, before you sit down to the interview. Ask Questions Less formal interviews and coffee meetings allow the candidate the opportunity to ask many questions about potential job openings, information about the company, and even career advice. Learning about the types of positions and the companyâs employees will give you an advantage in understanding how you can be a unique asset to their work. It will also give you a better picture of whether or not you would be happy working at that organization. The Next Step At the end of the meeting, exchanging contact information is a great way to expand your network and to reach out to thank the recruiter for taking the time to speak with you. This will keep you fresh in the interviewerâs mind. You can also reiterate your interest in moving forward in the hiring process. Even if youâre not interested in the specified position or the company, itâs a good idea to send a quick thank you email or note and to connect on social media outlets such as LinkedIn. While you may not be interested in the company, having a new connection can lead you to other opportunities that may be exactly what you are looking for. A Quick Review Heres more information on what you can expect when youâre invited for an informal interview, including how to get ready, what to bring and wear, questions to ask, and how to follow up.
